Cooking Without Power: Safe Options Compared
Cooking without a kitchen is where many emergency plans fail. The safe options, compared:
Camping gas stove (butane/propane cartridge)
Fast, controllable, cheap. Outdoor or with a window open (never in closed rooms). Cartridge math: 220 g cartridge ≈ 2–3 h burn time – a family needs 6+ cartridges per week. Keep spares cool, away from living spaces.
Alcohol burner
Silent, no pressure parts, stores forever. Slower (15 min to boil 1 L), fine for one-pot meals. Fuel is cheap and safe to store indoors.
Tea-light oven
Works, but weak heat output – better for keeping food warm than actual cooking. Fire risk with tea lights: never unattended, stable base. A good "4-tealight" stove boils 1 L in ~30 min.
Fire pit / grill (outdoor only)
Free fuel from wood if you have a garden. A Dutch oven extends the repertoire (bread, stews). Outdoors only, distance from buildings, never on a covered balcony.
No-cook backups
Plan 3 days of zero-cook food regardless: canned beans, muesli, nut butter, dried fruit, UHT meals. Cooking fuel is the first thing that runs out.

Nutrition & Supplements for the long run
Stockpiled food covers calories, but not always micronutrients: vitamin D in winter, B12 on a shelf-stable diet, magnesium under stress. Our partner platform SuperHealth.expert covers evidence-based supplements and long-term nutrition for exactly these gaps.
